Diet can make or break your health.  This is true for the entire body, but the effects may be greatest on the brain, especially as you age.  There are many foods that boost brain activity and health and the best are eaten fresh and raw.  Including these superfoods in your diet decreases the rate of mental decline and the risk of developing many diseases and painful syndromes.

Include foods in your diet that boost brain function and health:

   1)   Blueberries

This favorite has been shown to enhance memory and increase the rate of brain cell growth.  The antioxidant properties help to prevent cell damage. It’s believed that Organic Blueberries, 4.4 oz are one of the foods that can help to increase lifespan.  Here is an amazing GLUTEN FREE PEACH BLACKBERRY CRISP by my friend,

   2)  Cold-water fish.

Fish, such as salmon  (Wild Alaskan Salmon Random Weight Dinner Fillets – Buyer’s Club Bulk Pack (Wild Sockeye Salmon, 10 lbs)and herring (MW Polar Herring, Kipper Snacks, 3.53-Ounce (Pack of 18)), contain omega-3 fatty acids which have multiple benefits.   They build brain membranes and reduce inflammation in the brain.  This is the best type of fat for your brain especially for brain issues such as dementia.

   3)  We’re not talking about the chocolate in the checkout line, but real chocolate with a significant percentage of cacao.

This is one of the strongest antioxidants you can consume.  It’s also been shown to increase blood flow in the brain.  You’ll also enjoy decreased reaction times and improved memory.  It allows for the release of feel good hormones from your brain, too.  No wonder we love it so!  Here is the Cacao  ( Viva Naturals 1 Best Selling Certified Organic Cacao Powder from Superior Criollo Beans, 1 LB Bag)that I use.  I make N’ice Cream using 2 bananas, frozen sweet cherries and cacao…yummmmm

   4)  Drinking coffee is good again.

There are health benefits to drinking coffee on a regular basis. Studies show that drinking coffee (Peet’s Ground Coffee, Major Dickason’s Blend, Dark roast, 12-Ounce ) lowers the risks of getting Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.  That doesn’t mean the kind of coffee that you load up with sugar and syrups.  Just watch out for extras and you’ll be getting all the health benefits.

   5)  Olive oil.

If you must eat oil, olive oil is considered to be one of the few healthy oils you can buy in the local supermarket . One of the benefits is due to the polyphenols in olive oil. Olive oil can lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and improve memory and learning. The highest quality is cold pressed oil (Zoe Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 25.5- Ounce tins (Pack of 2) ).

   6)  Nuts.

Many types of nuts are filled with healthy fats that are beneficial to brain health.  You can add nuts to salads and sandwiches even top casseroles with fresh nuts (Fresh Mixed Nuts Roasted Unsalted Cashews, Walnuts, Brazil Nuts, Hazelnuts, Almonds, (2 Pound Bag) – Oh! Nuts ). These are also very good for brain health and disorders.

   7)  Several studies have indicated that cranberries are helpful after experiencing a stroke.

Recovery occurs faster and is more complete. Cranberries (Traverse Bay Fruit Co. Dried Cranberries, 4-Pound Box ) can also reduce the damage caused by a stroke.  Many use them in weight control and they are a nice little tang when added to fruit juice.

   8)   Eggs are back on the good for you list.

Actually, they were never off.  Specifically, egg yolks can be brain-healthy. The high choline content decreases the incidence of senility in seniors.  Consider adding an egg a day to your diet, with your doctor’s permission.  I recommend buying farm fresh eggs (One-Half Dozen Farm Fresh Fertile Free Range Chicken Eggs ).

   9)  Green leafy vegetables.

Vegetables like collard greens (Glory Foods Seasoned Collard Greens, 27-Ounce (Pack of 6)), kale (KALE FRESH PRODUCE FRUIT VEGETABLES PER BUNDLE EACH (1)), and spinach (Organicgirl Baby Spinach, 5 oz Clamshell)can slow the decline of cognitive functioning. Two servings each day can reduce the age of your brain by an equivalent of 11 years!  And to balance your blood sugar, munching on plain old spinach can’t be beat!

   10) Avocados are another healthy fat.

Like olive oil, avocado contains monounsaturated fat.  Avocados lower blood pressure and increase blood flow in the brain.  Due to the high calorie content of avocados, many health professionals suggest limiting intake to half an avocado per day. Avocados (24 Fresh California Hass Avocados) add a creamy but healthy texture to dressings and even smoothies.

   11)  Pomegranates or pomegranate juice.

A powerful antioxidant, pomegranate (Lakewood PURE Pomegranate Juice, 32-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6)) minimizes free-radical damage in the brain. Not to mention how good they taste.

   12) Green tea.

The antioxidant activity of green tea (Stash Tea Premium Green Tea, 100 Count Box of Tea Bags in Foil) benefits the entire body and provides little caffeine.  The tea must be freshly made.  The beneficial catechines found in freshly made tea are absent in bottled and powdered teas.

Life is the pits when your health is poor.  Increasing the number, and the quality, of years that you enjoy is mostly dependent on your diet.  It’s easy to include a few of these brain-healthy foods each day . Make your plate fill up with these super foods daily and see how well you can really feel.  You may have thought you could never feel this good again.

Contact your physician if you have any concerns or questions.

Don’t wait till you’re sick all day or until your later years to begin thinking about your diet.  Give it your full attention today.  Diet is more effective at preventing health issues in the beginning. Start adding these healthy foods to your diet right away. Feel your best and you will be your best!
