5 Toxic Beliefs About Weight Loss

Girl with Head bowed in thought with title,5 Toxic Beliefs About Weight Loss

Some beliefs have the power to stop you dead in your tracks.  If you believe that you could never run a marathon, you’d never even try.  Some toxic beliefs can leak into multiple areas of your life.  These beliefs are much more damaging than specific beliefs.  Believing you can never learn to play the banjo doesn’t have the same negative impact as the belief that you’re too old to follow your dreams.  And if you have negative beliefs that revolve about losing weight, it can hold you back from meeting your potential.

Rid yourself of the toxic beliefs that limit you:

   1) It’s too late, or I’m too old to lose weight.

Sometimes it is too late.  You’re probably not going to start playing in the NBA if you’re 43 years old.  But the number of things you can do about your weight is much greater than the number of things you can’t.

  • Colonel Sanders didn’t settle on a chicken recipe until he was 49 years old.  Yet, you know who he is and you’ve eaten his chicken.
  • There have been a few medical students that didn’t get started until their 60’s.  Avoid jumping to conclusions regarding your age. You can do a lot more than you think.

   2)  Failure is bad.

Failure is normal.  If you’re living, you’re also failing sometimes.  And if you’ve worked at losing weight over and over, only to gain it back plus a little more,  you may believe you’ll never be able to achieve that goal.  The trick is to fail in the right way and learn from it.  Failure is nothing more than an undesired result. Failure is just information.  Use that information to learn a better way to do the task.

  • Take the opportunity to learn from your failures and adjust your approach.  If one way doesn’t work, try another.  If you continue to improve your method, how can you possibly fail over the long haul?  It’s kind of like having two year old.  What worked today, might not work tomorrow.  Find a different way.  For weight loss, I wonder if you’ve ever tried hypnosis.  Hypnosis can give you an edge.

   3)  The past equals the future.

You have an amazing ability to change and adapt.  Just because you’ve been lazy, made poor choices, been uneducated, had poor social skills, or self-destructed in the past doesn’t mean the future can’t be different. The past only affects you if you permit it. You can choose to drop the past and live in the present.  Give yourself permission to be over the top with your weight loss, try new ideas and take a chance on changing your diet completely.  You may find a new way of eating that not only works wonders for your shape and size but you might find you feel a whole lot better, too.

   4)  People will laugh or judge me.

You’re right.  They will.  You’re not wrong, but it hurts you to be so concerned about the opinions of others.  No matter what you do, there are people that won’t be impressed.  And there’s always someone ready to make a negative comment.  Who cares about them?  Shake off the haters!

  • You don’t have time to worry about such silliness.  You’re not fifteen or in high school, so let go of the peer pressure.
  • Please yourself and don’t worry about anyone else’s opinion.  At all.

   5)  I’m not smart, I’m not good with money, I’m not good with people, I’m not educated enough, I’m not special, or I’m not fill in the blank.

No one is good at everything.  You can learn to be good at whatever skill you are weak in.  Don’t know how to save money?  Read a book.  Not good with people?  Take a class.  Lacking in real estate knowledge?  Find a mentor.  Can’t seem to take the weight off?  Use hypnosis, find a group to participate in and be open to a new way.  My Weight Loss Epiphany program is a way to get that hypnotic edge over your old weight loss beliefs.  You can take it at home and on your own or with me; in person or by webcam.

  • Successful people are often surprisingly ordinary.  You don’t have to do anything spectacular to have spectacular results.  You can find or create whatever you’re currently lacking.
