Alpha Waves = Dreamy Feeling

Alpha waves = dreamy feeling, yes, it’s that feeling that you get when you are on the threshold of a hypnotic trance.

It may seem weird that we first talked about Beta waves and after that, Alpha.  After all, isn’t Alpha the first letter in the Greek alphabet and Beta the second? That’s true but when Alpha waves were discovered in 1929, they were the first brain waves recorded on that early EEG machine.

   The Key to Creativity

Alpha waves have a frequency of 8 – 13 hertz.  They are key to creativity.  They are that state where you feel completely relaxed but alert.  A client of mine who is a trucker described a state he gets into while driving.  He told me he feels completely alert; aware of all the vehicles he can see in front, to the sides, and behind him.  He almost feels a connection to them all but he is relaxed and peaceful at that time, as well.  That’s an Alpha Wave state.  It feels really good.

  Highly Creative? That’s Alpha.

Creative people have lots of Alpha Waves.  Tests show that highly creative people even have different waves from others and that they have a burst of Alpha Wave activity right before a burst of creativity.  Did you ever think that that is what happens when you “brainstorm” a problem?  Persons who are normal or not very creative don’t have much of this super duper Alpha Wave activity. They have a hard time coming up with out of the box solutions to problems.

Also when you are in the throes of an extreme emotion, there are no comforting Alpha Waves present. When you are angry or really frustrated, no Alpha Waves.  That makes sense because in high emotion we are not relaxed or dreamy or creative.

    Alpha for the Pros

Another place where there are a lot of Alpha Waves is with professional athletes, it’s shown they get a huge burst of Alpha Wave activity before peak performance.  Athletes below this performance level do not show this activity.  But there was a study done with archers, that showed over the course of weeks of practice, they did increase their Alpha Wave output.  I would conclude from that that proficiency increases Alpha Wave production which leads to more peak performance.  So your practicing more and more increases the Alpha activity which in turn makes you a better athlete.

   In Conclusion:

You’ve learned that Alpha Brain Waves are the source of creativity.  Alpha Waves feel good and often hit when you have a brainstorm.  Alpha Waves are also strong in pro athletes and science shows that you can increase your Alphas by practice.  When you need to be more creative, think out of the box and perform at your best,  increase your Alpha Wave states.
