Theta Waves = Hypnosis and Visualization

Theta Waves = Hypnosis and Visualization

Theta Waves = Hypnosis and visualization; and here is where it all happens in my world.

This is a range that includes hypnosis and REM dream states at its extremes.  While you are in Theta Wave states, your Subconscious Mind is open and creative.  This is where ideas can come to you and also where you day dream.

Ever Had an Idea Just Pop into Your Head?

When doing mundane tasks, we often slip into Theta Waves.  Maybe you’ve driven down the highway and had an idea or solution to a problem pop into your head.  Have you ever had inspiration while in the shower?  I remember an interview with the then head designer of Barbie dolls, where she said she kept a grease pencil in her shower.   So many good ideas came to her for Barbie in the shower that she took to writing them on the glass door of the shower so she wouldn’t forget them!

This is the Advantage of the Theta Wave State.

This is where we do most hypnosis, too, because we want you to be conscious and hear everything we say, but we want the Subconscious Mind to be open and suggestable to what you want to change.

We aren’t blocked from the Subconscious Mind in this state and it can react to what is suggested, when it is stated in just the right way.  You can also tap into creativity with Theta Waves. You know that feeling when you just can’t do a task anymore and you need a break.  Maybe you’re stuck and can’t think of what should come next or you’re just tired.  Go out and take a walk.  Just being in nature and placing one foot in front of the other can put you in that Theta Wave state where suddenly you’re creativity kicks in.   And – Boom! – the perfect solution comes!  This state of hypnosis is perfect for most of the work I do.

Aren’t I Supposed to Asleep in Hypnosis?

A rather light state is just right for weight loss, smoking cessation and getting rid of fears and phobias.  You might think that the deeper the trance the better.  Not so, for most issues.

It’s so important to your health to reach that Theta Wave frequency.  Persons who do not reach REM dream state enough, develop mental and physical issues. We need Theta Waves for our good health.  If you’ve ever gone through a sleep study, you know that the medical team tests your brain waves to see how deeply you are sleeping.  If you aren’t getting enough Theta Waves, they are going to address that  .Person’s with Sleep Apnea usually are not getting enough Theta Waves to restore their body and mind.

   Too Much Theta

On the other hand, you can get too much of a good thing.  Too much time in Theta Waves can be seen in persons suffering from  ADHD, depression, hyperactivity, impulsivity or inattentiveness. These persons can become highly suggestible and that isn’t a good thing . You want to be able to say, “no” when you need to.

So, if you’re prone to depression, think about how much time you spend in day dreaming mode.  See if changing your routine helps that.  One thing that can help is exercise.  Break up your day with some physical movement, it helps to decrease Theta Wave time and reduce depression.

Same thing if you have a child with ADHD.  Get them more physical movement.  They tend to be high energy people and need a more than normal amount of movement.  Even when they are asked to be seated quietly, like in class, they are like a glass where water is slowly building up.  That glass is going to fill and they will be forced to release the pent up energy. Like that  glass filled with water will spill over, their excess energy must come out. But give the ADHD child a way to move, such as using Bouncy Bands, and they can dissipate that energy throughout their class time. They will not build up the energy and tension until it must be released.

   In Conclusion:

So, we’ve found out today that Theta Waves in the right amount are helpful for hypnosis, creativity, and a restorative sleep state.  Also we learned that too much time spent in Theta can result in depression and other mental and physical states.  And finally, we learned that movement of the physical body can greatly help someone who suffers from a condition brought on by too much time in Theta Wave

Wow, that was a lot to take in!  But helpful as you learn more and more about hypnosis and how beneficial it is to the body.   Knowing about brain waves and the help a person needs to refine their time in the states most conducive to them, is my job as a hypnotherapist.
